Tlokwe Local Municipality

From the oldest settlement north of the Vaal River to a world-renowned city in sports, culture and education.

Potchefstroom, the gateway to North West Province, is a laid-back city away from the hustle and bustle of the ‘big city’. However, with all the excellent academic, cultural, medical, retail and sporting facilities, Potchefstroom still offers similar business opportunities. Within an hour's drive from Johannesburg en route to Kimberley along the N12 Treasure Route, the city is ideally located to be the growth point linking North West Province with the country's industrial heartbeat that is Gauteng. Potchefstroom is generally regarded as the North West home of sport – the provincial headquarters of 17 high-profile sport disciplines. Potchefstroom boasts an astro-hockey field, the Potchefstroom golf club and nationally acclaimed cricket, rugby and soccer stadiums. Furthermore, the city is home to excellent training facilities and weather conditions to allow for Potchefstroom to be recognised as a popular training venue for international athletes.

Attractions
The Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site is the most clearly identifiable, largest and oldest meteorite impact crater in the world. It lies between the North West and Free State Provinces. Unesco listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2005 with geological, as well as cultural and bio-diverse uniqueness. The Dome, with its unique geological phenomenon, has over a period of time, developed into an eco-adventure destination, a major attraction in South Africa. Potchefstroom – as a world-class science and research centre – is home to five different tertiary institutions; each a leader in its field. The North West University alone has nine faculties, 28 schools and 12 research-focus areas. It provides high-level training and research in various disciplines which support and serve specialised fields countrywide and internationally. Most of all, Potchefstroom is well known for the quality of community life. All aspects of life are important and all within the framework of an environmentally responsible city.

Potchefstroom is host to the annual Aardklop Festival, while the historical Oak Avenue, which stretches for 6.48km, contributes to the picturesque atmosphere of Steve Biko Avenue in the Bult area – the student hub of Potchefstroom.
