The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District of the North West Province is located only 65km south-west of Johannesburg and borders Gauteng on the east and the Free State to the
south-east. It is an economically dynamic region with a rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage.
The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District consists of four local municipalities: the cities of Tlokwe (formerly Potchefstroom) and Matlosana (formerly Klerksdorp) and the towns of Maquassi Hills (formerly Wolmaransstad) and Ventersdorp.
The region is home to the largest gold mine in the world, one of the oldest meteor impact
sites in the world (and the largest in South Africa), the site of the establishment of the first capital city in the northern areas of South Africa, and some of the best education, sport and medical facilities on the African continent.

Although the area faces challenges in terms of poverty alleviation, as does South Africa in general, the local governments in the district are determined to effectively address poverty and lack of access to basic services. The Integrated Development Plans of the municipalities in the region provide five-year plans supported by capital budgets to fast-track the development of all the people in this culturally rich and diversified area of Africa.
