Provide safety through effective coordination of crime prevention initiatives, provincial policeoversight, traffic management and road safety – towards a more secure environment.

Description of services
The Department is mandated to uphold and improve public safety in the province and
it does this by focusing on crime reduction strategies and implementing programmes to
improve road and community safety.

The role of the North West Department of Public Safety with respect to policing is:

  • to monitor police conduct
  • to oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of the police service, including receiving reports on the police service
  • to promote good relations between the police and the community
  • to assess the effectiveness of visible policing
  • to liaise with the Cabinet member responsible for policing with respect to crime and policing in the province.

    The Department of Public Safety is concerned with all aspects of community safety within the province but has particular programmes aimed at addressing the following issues:

  • Rural safety
  • Road safety
  • Traffic management
  • Firearm control
  • Corruption
  • Effective police oversight
  • Community policing
  • Security concerns around the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™
